Order an ImageThis silk dress with bias-cut panels has a label from “Madame Thiry,” a fashionable Seattle shop run by Louise Schwaebele Thiry. Thiry was born in Paris and came west in the early 20th century. Her fashion career started as a side business—importing goods from Paris to sell in Alaska and Seattle for supplementary income. After her husband left for WWI and didn’t return, her business became a lifeline to support herself and her young son, Paul. From her enduring, pronounced French accent to styling herself as “Madame,” Thiry leveraged her Parisian pedigree to gain authority in Seattle’s fashion scene. Her shop imported clothes that could be sold as-is or used as inspiration to have something similar designed in-house. Her son Paul Thiry became an influential Seattle architect.
